Blue Bell – Fossgate, York

Will be offering cellar tours on a first come, first serve basis – ask at the bar. This is a rare chance to see one of the oldest parts of the grade II* listed Blue Bell pub, which is one of York’s finest pubs, having won CAMRA York pub of the year in 2022.

They will also have an ale from the festival on tap, in addition to the usual range of excellent ales and locally produced pork pies. Finally, there is also the chance to buy the landlord’s self authored book on the Blue Bell’s fascinating history.

The Waggon and Horses, Lawrence Street, York

The closest pub to the festival site, the Waggon is a great supporter of CAMRA and has a bar stocked with high quality real ales and ciders, as well as boasting a range of characterful rooms and a large beer garden out back. Well worth a visit before or after your festival session.

The Rook and Gaskill, Lawrence Street, York

One of the closest pubs to the festival, the Rook offers a wide range of ales, ciders, keg and canned ales and a full menu of high quality food from 5pm each weekday.

On Thursday night there will be the ‘Big Fat Quiz’, which is a lively evening with great prizes! Festival goers are more than welcome to join in.

Throughout the festival the Rook will have a range of cask beers from the USA, which include:

Hoponius Union, Indian Pale Lager by Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers

Buck Buck Juice, Imperial/Double IPA by Gravity Craft Brewery.

Mayflower Barrel Aged Brown Ale by Mayflower Brewing Company

CAMRA York’s pub of the year 2023 offers a very warm welcome, complete with a range of high quality ales and ciders, locally produced pies and all just a short walk from the festival.

On Wednesday and Friday there will be jazz in the evening, by local musicians who are part of the Phoenix’s music community and perform each week.

The Slip Inn, Clementhorpe, York

https://whatpub.com/pubs/YOR/160/slip-inn-york

The Slip is to be found hiding away near to the river and close to its sister pub, the Swan. This community pub is known for excellent ales, a characterful interior and a lovely beer garden out back. Most importantly, it has hand pulls and a strong keg selection. A proper old fashioned boozer.

The Swan, York

CAMRA’s Pub of the Year in York City for 2024, The Swan is unique in York in being the old West Riding layout, with a central bar and two well appointed rooms radiating off, one from each side. It has a range of excellent real ales, one of which is Tetley’s, in recognition of this being an historic Tetley’s pub. There is also a very good green beer garden out back and a rotating keg selection, which all combine to make this a must visit venue in the Fringe.

The Volunteer Arms, Holgate, York

https://whatpub.com/pubs/YOR/186/volunteer-arms-york

The third of the sister community pubs (Swan and Slip also, above), which are all part of the same grouping, this hidden gem is to be found in Holgate. It is a beautifully appointed pub, full of characterful features and boasts a range of very well kept real ales (5 regular [usually local] and 2 rotating, [usually from further afield]), alongside a warm welcome and a beer garden out back. Just a short walk from the station and well worth the effort.
